Topping the list of nominees for the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards® are Beyoncé (11), Charli xcx (7), Billie Eilish (7), Kendrick Lamar (7), Post Malone (7), Sabrina Carpenter (6), Chappell Roan (6), and Taylor Swift (6). As the only peer-voted music award, the GRAMMY Awards® are selected by the Recording Academy®'s voting membership body of music makers, who represent all genres and creative disciplines, including recording artists, songwriters, composers, producers, mixers, and engineers. The nominees were announced via a livestream event on live.GRAMMY.com and YouTube. "Today we celebrate the amazing creative achievements of our music community," said Harvey Mason jr., CEO of the Recording Academy. "It was an incredible year in music and these nominations reflect the work of a voting body that is more representative of the music community than ever before. The GRAMMY® became music's most coveted award precisely because the recognition comes from one's peers, and I'm so grateful for the Academy's 13,000 voting members who take the time to evaluate all the amazing music, cast their votes, and honor their peers. Congratulations to all the nominees." This year's eligibility period includes recordings released between Sept. 16, 2023 – Aug. 30, 2024. The final round of GRAMMY voting, which will determine GRAMMY recipients, will take place Dec. 12, 2024 – Jan. 3, 2025. Quincy Jones, whose influence and genius touched every corner of the industry, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy as vibrant and groundbreaking as the music he created. Known as one of the greatest music producers and arrangers of all time, Jones’ career spans decades, genres, and generations, from jazz and pop to hip-hop and film scores. As we reflect on his life and impact, it’s clear he shaped music history in ways that will resonate for years to come. Early Years and Rise to Fame Born in 1933 on the South Side of Chicago, Quincy Jones began his music journey as a trumpeter, quickly making his way to the big stage. He worked alongside jazz legends like Lionel Hampton, who gave him his first break as a bandleader. This led to collaborations with icons such as Ray Charles, Dizzy Gillespie, and Frank Sinatra, who took notice of Jones’ immense talent for arrangement and production. Crossing Boundaries and Breaking Records Jones broke down barriers throughout his career, becoming one of the first Black composers to arrange for television and film in Hollywood. His works on TV shows and films like The Pawnbroker and In Cold Blood showcased his genre-blending skills, merging jazz, classical, and funk. In 1978, he produced the soundtrack for The Wiz, featuring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, solidifying his role in creating the "sound" of a generation. The “Thriller” Era and Legacy in Pop Music Perhaps Jones’ most iconic contribution to pop culture was his work with Michael Jackson. Together, they produced Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), and Bad (1987). Thriller remains the best-selling album of all time, featuring unforgettable hits like “Billie Jean,” “Beat It,” and the title track, which forever changed the pop music landscape. Jones’ ability to bridge pop, soul, and funk not only catapulted Jackson to superstardom but also pushed production techniques that are still studied and emulated by producers today. Champion of Collaboration and Innovation Jones was a collaborator at heart, bringing together talents from all backgrounds. His work with stars like Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, and Miles Davis demonstrated his knack for crafting timeless hits across all genres. Even in his later years, he continued to innovate, working with hip-hop and R&B artists like Kendrick Lamar and Pharrell, bridging old-school and new-school sounds. Jones was also the driving force behind We Are the World, a global charity single that united superstars like Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, and Tina Turner to raise funds for famine relief in Africa. The song became a worldwide anthem of unity and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time. Awards and Honors: A Lifetime of Recognition Throughout his career, Quincy Jones received 28 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award nomination, and countless other honors. In 2013, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with artists worldwide acknowledging his pioneering influence. His awards are numerous, but they only scratch the surface of the countless musicians, producers, and fans he inspired along the way. A Lasting Legacy Quincy Jones was more than a producer; he was a visionary, a mentor, and a force for change. His impact on music history will forever be felt, as he taught us that music is limitless. In every note, beat, and melody, Jones’ genius will continue to inspire generations of creators to push boundaries, cross genres, and unite people through the power of music. Today, as we remember Quincy Jones, we honor not just a life but a lifetime of contribution to the arts. He may be gone, but his music and influence will forever echo in the sounds and stories of those who follow in his footsteps. |
